Stephen A. Smith: Bosh trying to get S&T deal with Houston Rockets

From stephena.com:

All along, Pat Riley’s plan as President of the Heat was to convince Wade to take a paycut and offer all three (Wade, LeBron and Bosh) deals averaging approximately $15.7 mil….with opt-outs after three years. But since Bosh wants the max at all cost (and he’s trying to get it in a sign-and-trade deal with Houston), it changed the game for everyone. Especially Miami and New York.

Not exactly the most credible of sources but at the same time, we can at least take comfort in knowing that this isn’t a leak – if Henry Thomas wanted to use the media, he’d pass it along to some of the bigger names with Y! and ESPN.

For now, we can speculate.  If the report is true, it affirms Morey’s prescience – Bosh won’t go without a S&T.  My fear though is the Bulls putting together a package to ship Deng elsewhere, sending the return to Toronto for a Bosh S&T.

cheolee,

I agree...

Like to add this however.

Chris Bosh wants a 6year DEAL. he can only get that via sign and trade. (Some bargaining hoopla)

Chris Bosh functionally wants a 6 year 115million dollar deal (i think my math is close to correct)

2 variables as you pointed out.

1) Chris Bosh
2) Toronto Raptors

1) Bosh is from dallas would be close to home and recognizes the money is higher here (no salary tax) Houston literally can give him the MOST money.

2) TORONTO WON"T SEND BOSH TO A TEAM UNDER THE CAP. The Lakers seem to not want to give enough for him. Dallas is all talk no action.

that perty much leaves Houston. Part of Torontos not wanting to S&T was based off not letting Bosh decide his location... they were going to prevent him from saying "I want to go to Chicago in S&T and the Raptors having to deal with a three headed Monster.

I know the Media wants a super team but the OTHER teams don't!

Kade: Have we scheduled to even meet with Lebron? I don’t think that’s a meeting that can be kept a secret and would find it hard to believe he would want to be a Rocket w/o a meet and greet. What did Rome say in regards to any facts to this or did he just say the Rockets are a dark horse and nothing else?  (reply with quote)  (reply w/out quote)

something to the effect that the rockets offered everything in the criteria that lebron set in place, and that if he really wants to win, AND make a ton of money then houston would be an ideal scenario due to the strong core of players and the immense support and monetary rewards he would attain in china through boo koo endorsements.

Why not go for Chris Paul?

Here's my theory on what the Rocket front office's progressive thoughts have been for the past few years:

1) The question should always start with, "How can we place ourselves in a position to win a championship?" The traditional formula for a road to a championship = 1 Top 5 player + 1 top 25 player + great role players and good chemistry + be in top 10 team for offense/defense. We have the top 25 player in a potentially healthy Yao, our collection of role players are the best in NBA, we've been top 5 in terms of defense for the last few years (except the most recent season without Yao or Mutumbo), and we've acquired Martin who not only brings his own offense, but positively affects team offense by his ability to put opponents in the penalty early. So, the only thing missing from fitting that "championship mold" is a Top 5-ish guy to lead the team.

2) Then, they thought, "How can we acquire this type of talent?" Franchise players are drafted (usually very high) an overwhelming percentage of the time. However, the chances of the Rockets getting a top 5 pick is very very low and even then, there is no certainty or control over such matters. They decided that the best thing to do is to acquire one via S&T. So they diligently accrue picks and young talent to be able to use if the opportunity comes.

3) If the goal is to get a player for s&t, then you have to satisfy both the player's current team and targeted free agent. Teams that lose their franchise player want expirings, young talent, and picks in return. Isn't it ironic that a player like Jeffries, whom NY had to pay a heft price to take him off their hands, might be a crucial asset in being able to do a s&t for a max salary type player? Essentially, Morey convinced NY to take Mac's corpse and give us a #8 pick, and 2 future 1st round draft picks, and a "dead weight contract" that will be essential in any s&t scenarios for us. AMAZING!

4) As for the max salary level type of player, the Rockets need to be able to set themselves apart as a destination and convince them that we are the best choice for them.
So what do the players want? I think it goes: Winning > Money (or vice versa) > chance to be "the man" > coach > owner > management > fans > location. What sets Houston apart from all the other teams? They have the best combination of ALL of these categories. That is what I think has been our management's strategy the whole time. We currently are a team that has every important component in place. The only thing missing is that star player. I think all the moves in the past few years have been geared toward making ourselves in to a team that would be a perfect fit for a star to plug right in.

Im ready for all this to be over. There is way to many rumors going on, im just glad we have the best "chess" player on our side. In DM we trust.

Any rumors about other teams trying to hunt down Scola and Lowry?
It'd be interesting to see us somehow manage a 3-team S&T, with 3 guys going to Toronto for Bosh and 1 guy with a draft pick going to a team that wants Lowry for a recent or future draft pick and their back-up PG.

Maybe Ric got misleading info.

My sense is that Deng or any players that you could get for Deng will make Toronto a lot worse. Deng has four years left on a contract that's paying 10--11 million per year. No way the Raptors take that on--they would be paying more than $20 million per year for two one-dimensional, below-average small forwards (don't forget our friend from Turkey that's killing the Raptors roster right now). It is unlikely that Toronto could engineer a trade to convert Deng into more palatable assets. So Toronto would be better off telling Bosh to sign with the Knicks or Nets or Heat of whomever, which means that Chicago and Bosh would have zero leverage. If Bosh wants to win--and the Raptors know he does--they could play hard ball and force him to take the Houston S & T, which is much better for Toronto.

If the Bulls grab Wade, then they probably look to Boozer or even Scola. Scola would actually be a great fit, as a starting five of Rose, Noah, Deng, Scola, and Wade sounds pretty good to me. I bet Scola gets offered $8-10 million over five years.

Houston is the best fit for Bosh if Wade bolts to the Bulls, Lebron stays home in Cleveland, and Stoudemire ends up with the Knicks. It is the only way he gets to play for a championship in the near future.

BoothQuake,
It's not about being a "better" package - it's just about the Bulls putting together any package that would satisfy Toronto's requirements. The Raptors don't hold full leverage here in picking where they want to send Bosh. Bosh COULD still theoretically just leave them high and dry and sign somewhere outright.

Luol Deng is going to be traded for a better package than we can offer for Bosh?...you've got to be kidding me

YES! I just woke up all my neighbors!
