Two weeks ago, the Rockets’ received the salary cap exception they had applied for after Yao Ming was lost for the season.
This would have enabled the team to add a player within the $5.875 million exception. It expires today, and, according to chron.com’s Jonathan Feigen, it appears it will go unused.
This is of little impact to the team, as the traded player exception created by the Trevor Ariza trade last summer is larger, $6.33 million, and does not expire until August 11.
Additionaly, Houston has three other exceptions from various trades:
Joey Dorsey – $881,000
Carl Landry -$1,647,360
Jermaine Taylor – $780,871
It is important to note that these exceptions cannot be combined nor used in conjunction with another player from the Rockets to acquire a contract of greater value. They can only be used on a singular basis.
