The Daily Blast – March 14, 2013

Triple Play – Not only did Houston take care of business against Phoenix, but the Lakers and Jazz lost last night. This is also known as the Clutch City Playoff Chances Triple Crown.

The Kankle – Barring something happening to Harden or Asik (knock on wood), there could not be a single injury in the league with more profound implications for the Rockets playoff hopes than the news that Kobe Bryant is out indefinitely with an ankle sprain. Whenever Kobe gets injured, I hold my breath for the inevitable “Mamba Shakes Off Pain, Scores 40″ headline two days later, but it seems like this one is for real.

However, I would temper any additional optimism for the Rockets’ playoff picture with the reality that the Lakers now have Steve Nash running their offense and still have Dwight Howard running their defense.

Houston Rockets 111, Phoenix Suns 81: A rout led by the frontcourt this time.

When one initially looked at the matchup between these two teams Saturday night, the assumption was that a Phoenix lineup starting a frontcourt of the Morris twins and long-time fan favorite Luis Scola would not be able to stop the Rockets from going into the paint at will.  Unfortunately, that proved not to be the case, as a strong defensive performance from Iranian Hamed Haddadi and a generally physical Phoenix playstyle hampered Houston there.  Tonight, however, after almost 18 minutes of lazy defense and blasé offense, the Rockets finally woke up, rallied behind their bigs and a team performance, and ended this game by the time the fourth quarter began.

On the NBA: Waiting for Superman

Dwight Howard and Carmelo Anthony both return to the cities that birthed their superstar NBA careers, this week. Anyone with a head can see that the efforts of both to play off these visits as ‘business as usual’ are in vain. Both Howard and Melo, in relation to Orlando and Denver, respectively, illustrate the craziness that permeates the relationship between would-be-savior athletes and their audience of an American city. And this is a particularly strained relationship, in basketball—where that one special player is popularly seen as converting famine into feast.

The Daily Blast – March 13, 2013

The Once and Future Aaron Brooks - In yesterday’s post-practice interview, Jeremy Lin revealed that Aaron Brooks gives exactly the kind of veteran advice you would expect to hear from Aaron Brooks. “Like for example, in the Golden State game at halftime, I was talking to him like, ‘How do you counteract someone so explosive offensively as Steph Curry?’ And he was saying, ‘You have got to attack him. Get him in foul trouble. If he’s on his heels then you’re going to neutralize a lot of what he does just by attacking him on the (sic) defensive end.”

Of course the defense he is referring to would be Curry’s defense. This is classic Aaron Brooks–saying the best way to slow down a great scorer is to make said scorer work to defend you. We have one more game against Golden State this year to see a conscience-free shootout between Brooks and Curry. The basketball gods of Order forbid it. The basketball gods of Chaos are drooling.

The Working Man’s Kevin McHale – One reporter asked the coach about the players having a couple days to “recharge,” unwittingly opening the door for a basketball sermon.

“I guess I’m way too old,” McHale said. “You’re playing basketball for a living. Recharge your batteries? Every morning you should get up and get on your knees and thank God you are playing basketball for a living. Someone is actually paying you–in some cases, millions and millions, and in other cases hundreds of thousands at the minimum–to play basketball.

“If you have to recharge your batteries, to play basketball…I understand recharging my batteries if I’ve done three double shifts, I’m laying cement, and then I come home. I understand that. I don’t understand–recharge your batteries for what? To be able to come out here and play basketball for a living? If you have to do that, you’re in the wrong sport. You’re doing the wrong thing. This is a high energy game that requires total commitment, but it’s a joy to play. It’s fun.”

If McHale had been holding a mic, he would have dropped it and walked off the stage.
