Houston Rockets 100, Utah jazz 93 – Hot Starts are Helpful

The Houston Rockets flipped the script of their last few games, deciding to come out strong and surge to an early lead. Houston pushed the deficit to 22 points in the second quarter and held it steady through most of the game. Racking up a sizable lead turned out to be a solid strategy for the Rockets, as it allowed them to weather a storm of Jazz scoring in the fourth quarter. It may not have ended as the blowout the Rockets were aiming for, but Houston came away with a much needed win on the back of a solid outing from their starting backcourt.

On Defense, Youth, Athleticism, the Future of Sabermetrics and Team Culture

“The idea is not to block every shot. The idea is to make your opponent believe that you might block every shot.” — Bill Russell

Zach Lowe’s Grantland piece about video tracking technology is probably the most important thing about the future of basketball you’ll read this week. But it also contains a point of hoops consilience that ties together continuing thoughts I’ve had about the Rockets for several years.

This point revolves around Jonas Valunciunas:

Valanciunas, like most rookies, misses rotations, overhelps, and commits other sins of positioning on defense. Coaches hate that stuff, and they’ve often nailed Valanciunas to the bench in crunch time in favor of Aaron Gray — a fundamentally sound player who lacks NBA athleticism.

The numbers in large part disagree with that tactic, at least as it relates to Valanciunas’s defense. The Raptors’ defense has been better with Valanciunas on the floor. More importantly, the visualization data shows that Valanciunas is active and athletic enough to make up for all his defensive mistakes, Rucker and his team say.

“With Jonas — yeah, he’s making mistakes,” Boyarsky says. “But who cares?

On the NBA: Discussion with David J. Leonard, author of ‘After Artest.’

‘After Artest: The NBA and the Assault on Blackness,’ the third book by David J. Leonard, is a deeply compelling interrogation of the historical racial politics at play in the power structures and representations relating the NBA’s players, audience, media, and organizations. I got a chance to correspond with Dr. Leonard via e-mail, for this week’s column.

Q – What led you to write this book?

The Daily Blast – March 19, 2013

Broken – Last night, the Heat surpassed the 07-08 Rockets’ 22 game winning streak by defeating the very team that ended Houston’s run. Long live the King.

All That Power – Despite Sunday night’s drubbing at the hands of Golden State, Houston held steady at 10 in Marc Stein’s power rankings. They slipped a spot in John Schumann’s rankings:

The Rockets continue to tread water, and Sunday’s game against the Warriors was a bad time for both Chandler Parsons (2-for-13) and Donatas Motiejunas (2-for-11) to go cold. That one could have put them in sixth place in the West, but now Wednesday’s game against the Jazz could possibly put them in ninth, with tougher opponents (Spurs, Pacers, Grizzlies and Clippers) still to come this month.
