Is this a sports forum or a book club???? I haven't spent this much time reading about other people's feelings in a long while.
If....IF Omer gets traded it's going to be very tough. Teams know that he wants to start and isn't willing to take a bench/reserve role. That rules out a lot of teams with entrenched starters. Let's make a list!
Chicago
Brooklyn
New York (Chandler will be back soon enough and take the starter's role)
Philadelphia (Hawes has been great for them--Maybe Hinkie throws Morey another "friendly" trade)
Orlando
Toronto
Minnesota
Indiana
Detroit
Golden State
Sacramento
LA Clippers
Portland (I think they are happy with Lopez)
Charlotte
Washington (would they trade Nene for Asik? Could you move Gortat to PF?)
Utah
I think it is safe to say all of these teams are out unless we throw in James Harden or Chandler Parsons while taking back some of their trash. Not going to happen.
So, who is left?
San Antonio
New Orleans
Oklahoma City
Atlanta
Cleveland
Boston
LA Lakers
Phoenix
Milwaukee
Dallas
Miami
Denver
So there's twelve possible teams. Of those, We probably do not want to send Asik to OKC, NO, or Dallas as that would immediately make each of them threats to us. That leaves 9 teams:
San Antonio
Atlanta
Cleveland
Boston
LA Lakers
Phoenix
Milwaukee
Miami
Denver
I just can't see Atlanta giving us Millsap unless we throw in Parsons and one of our young guys Probably T-Jones. That leaves us pretty thin at center. They're out.
Cleveland Has Varejao and Bynum. Varejao will be the starter whenever he is healthy so they can't realistically take Asik and I don't think they would trade Varejao to us in a fair swap....if they would I'd take it! (presuming he will take a bench role)
Miami would have to be a Bosh trade. (we've been over this) It would have to be Lin+Asik+ filler for Bosh and Chalmers....not a terrible thing for either team really...We'll keep them in play .
I'm not sure if San Antonio would want Asik or what they would do with Splitter...I'm leaving them out of this unless someone can convince me they would trade Splitter and Bonner for Asik! OK, who's left?
Boston
LA Lakers
Phoenix
Milwaukee
Miami
Denver
Lakers have nothing we want except Pau, but the money doesn't work without throwing in Lin...Asik+Lin for Pau and Steve Blake? I don't really care for that deal. Lakers are out!
Boston is not going to give us Jeff Green For Asik....Unless they put on a fire sale to ensure the worst record in the league...which is possible I guess. I suppose we could send them a lot of our youngsters which might intrigue them and they can give us Melo or Sullinger. I'll put them in the Miami group.
This brings us to my three favorites for a possible trade: Phoenix, Milwaukee, and Denver.
Milwaukee might be looking to sell high on Larry Sanders as he seems to be imploding on and off the court. Pachulia is ok, but with Jon Henson/Ilyasova at the forward slots, Asik would be a solid Center with them. There are enough nice pieces floating around for us to make a mutually beneficial trade and then they could put Sanders on the market without worrying about a back-up plan.
JaVale McGee isn't doing it for Denver it seems. I think Shaw is looking to shake up the roster and get guys he wants. I think just about everyone but Lawson and Gallinari are available for trade. I don't know if Denver wants Asik, but if they do I don't see why we couldn't get something useful in return. Here's a LINK to their roster.
Phoenix is looking good. They might be thinking playoffs and Asik might appeal to them--they get plenty of scoring at the other 4 positions and between Dragic and Bledsoe they could get Omer easy set-ups for dunks like he did last year. I'd be willing to take Plumlee or Len off their hands....oh wait, they've got Okafor...forgot about him...this could take them out of the equation.
So, what we've got are 4 teams. Miami, Boston, Denver and Milwaukee....All with serious question marks. I think our chances of getting much of anything good for Asik (without packaging up Lin/Bev and Parsons/T-Jones) is bleak. Teams know our hands are tied. They also know they have to pay Asik $15M next year (I know the Rox can send $3M to help, but I think Morey will be reluctant to use all $3M because that ties our hands in other areas). They also know he is essentially a one-way player. It's a bad situation all around....We should just trade Dwight!
