Fake Trade Deadline Day

Clutchfans has reported, via Twitter, that the league has informed the Rockets that the deadline to receive re-tradeable players is actually tomorrow, so its unclear at the moment when this thing is going to happen.  But still, I wanted to use this headline and wouldn’t have been able to if I waited for tomorrow and they traded Asik today.  So there you have it.

A couple of things: From my interactions with some of you on Twitter, it seems many haven’t been watching Morey very closely over the past few years.  This rumored Lee, Bass, pick deal, in its current manifestation, should be dubbed the ‘Anti-Morey deal’ because it reeks of everything Morey, a highly principled manager, has been loath to do during his tenure.  Trade away the best player in a deal without getting back actual value?  Check.  Take on long-term salary?  Check.  Acquire players with presumable ‘immediate’ fit but little ‘liquidity’ value?  Check.  Hell, Morey is the same guy that refused to give his very best player at the time, Goran Dragic, a player option, simply because of his stance on long-term flexibility…he let the guy walk!  And you would have me believe he’s going to take on Courtney Lee for three more years just because “we need perimeter defense” and “aren’t getting anything from Asik anyway”…?  You’re missing the big picture.

Reader RollingWave points out that its questionable whether Bass would even represent an upgrade considering that Omri Casspi leads the team in +/-.  But even setting that aside, the point is that this just isn’t Daryl Morey’s style.  He doesn’t panic, he wouldn’t trade a guy just because said guy wants out (see: Martin, Kevin), and he certainly doesn’t subscribe to the “well, we’re not getting anything from player X right now so we might as well take this crap deal right now” train of thought.  Guys like Bass and Lee are of a mold of player that Morey plucks from the scrap heap for dimes; he doesn’t deal special talents for them at exorbitant lengths.

All of the above is why I’m convinced this leaked report is inaccurate and we’ll see a surprise either today or tomorrow.  I think you’ll see them either do a different deal altogether, you’ll see this same deal without Lee, or they’ll get two draft picks.  But I’d just be absolutely floored if Morey, knowing what we know of how we works, took this deal in its current form.  We’ll see.

Perhaps Houston ought to look at Orlando.

They could trade Lin and Asik to Orlando for Jameer Nelson, Vucevic and Afflalo.

Vucevic is a very talented player who would accept playing off the bench. Afflalo has become a very good 2 guard in the league and can guard the 2/3 while handling his own business offensively. Nelson is a veteran PG that Howard would be comfortable with. Beverley could be the next option off the bench.

Orlando would get an upgrade at the 1/5 and allow Oladipo to take control of the SG position.

There is a zero chance Orlando makes this trade. Afflalo is better than Lin. Vucevic is better than Asik. Check out his stats HERE. Nelson is a solid PG. This doesn't even mention the fact that Afflalo and Vucevic were part of the original Dwight trade. Orlando wouldn't trade them to Houston just out of spite.

As far as Asik staying...I'll believe it once the deadline passes...for now, I'm glad he's here...as long as he gets on the court and does Asik things.

I still have a hard time believing it after all the bluster back and forth and the endless stream of Twitter misinformation, but it looks like Rahat was right about keeping Asik. After reading reports of alleged trade packages, I'm very pleased to hang on to him. If nothing else, maybe this will convince him to get out on the floor and improve his trade value so that Morey will be able to find an acceptable trade. I'd be happy to roll with him for the playoffs, though, because I think he'd help immensely against Portland, Memphis, or San Antonio, and against the Pacers or Heat should the Rockets make it that far.

Woj tweeted "Houston has ended talks on an Omer Asik trade and plan to keep him for now."

Yep, it's official, Asik stays. Apparently teams are weary of his contract which imo is ridiculous, Asik is easily worth $20m ($17m cap hit) over the next 2 years. I say this is a blessing in disguise for the Rockets, Asik's RAPM is in the top 30.

  • 2016Champions says 3 months ago Woj finally tweeted, apparently Sixers and Boston are both still very involved in trade talks.

Very vague tweet, I still doubt a deal gets done.

    Rahat,
I've tried to stay away from the trade speculation, but this is getting too fun.
What if the Boston trade offer was spiked because Boston wanted to unload Bass. As you noted,Bass is hardly the answer to Houston's needs.
But for fun,if you tweaked the trade to...
Houston gets Lee(Boston),Hawes(Philly),the Clipper 2015 First
Boston gets Asik(Hou),some min contract player from Philly,a Houston Second
Philly gets Bogans(and his non guaranteed 2014,2015 contract from Boston),Smith(Hou),and some combo of Seconds/rights to foreign players.

Houston ends up w/a competent back-up SG(desperately needed),a back-up C who spaces floor and a future First. Lee's contract is only two yrs,it fills a need and the money would have to be spent next yr on a back-up anyway, not to mention the Rockets would be taking back money no matter what for Asik.
What's key about the First is it would allow the Rockets to throw three Firsts into a future trade, their own 2014,the one from Boston and their own 2016.
This would be a make a move for this yr,while still being able to pit together a VERY good trade package later.
The odds of this particular deal are pretty close to zero, but something similar to this is probably what will happen.

Overlooked in the Asik drama is just how many teams Morey has been talking to. good relations among GMs helps facilitate trades and Morey has just spent the last few months building relationships-not to mention finding out who's available and for what price.

Looks like Rahat was right all along, Asik stays. I'm glad, now we can become the top 5 defensive team I predicted we will be with 48 minutes of elite paint protection.

What in the Omer hell is going on down there n Houston???

It's very simple, Morey has rejected all offers. Here is confirmation from Ainge himself that no deal is close

  • 2016Champions says 3 months ago Seems like that page was deleted. Here's more of the same from Henry Abbott http://hangtime.blogs.nba.com/2013/12/19/rockets-weigh-final-bids-for-asik/

For whatever it's worth Asik looked very happy on the bench yesterday, and McHale said Asik will be back soon. Asik refused to comment.

Boston Globe reports that negotiations died. Ainge wanted to put protections on the pick and Morey refused.
