Update: Bass, Lee, and a draft pick the latest Asik manifestation

Multiple sources have now come out and confirmed that the latest manifestation of an Omer Asik deal would include Brandon Bass, Courtney Lee, and a draft pick with the two sides currently haggling over which pick would be sent to Houston; reportedly, other teams have dropped out of discussions.

The key on this deal from the earlier Berger piece, for me:

But that potential exchange struck rival GMs as strange, considering the lack of market there would be for Bass and Lee in future trades. Houston wants to fulfill Asik’s trade request by Thursday so any players taken back could be repackaged in other deals before the Feb. 20 deadline.

“No one wants Lee or Bass on a third team or later deal,” one executive said. “They make more than their skill set.”

Bass and Lee are both solid players who would upgrade this team from its current state and fill some of its biggest holes (frontcourt depth, perimeter defense).  But neither are exactly assets that could later be repackaged; Lee, in particular, has a gruesome deal which extends into 2016.  And of course, both players are backups.  It doesn’t really fit the Daryl Morey MO to not only give up the best player in a trade for less value but also, to take back a long-term contract.  But I guess that is the situation Omer Asik has put the Rockets front office in.  If it were me, I would just hold onto Asik.  If your haul is Bass and Lee, two guys who can’t be flipped (per Berger), why the rush to trade Asik by the 19th?  You might as well just hold onto him until the deadline and see what happens.  I highly doubt he’s going to continue this fake injury charade for that long, even if unhappy.

Still, this is Morey, and he never gets fleeced, so we just need to wait and see what happens.  But that fact itself is what makes this whole thing so odd.

I can't recall...but haven't most of Morey's "trades" been projected as one thing or another only to have us all being slightly shocked with how the trade turned out ultimately? Seems like it could be a PR move...

The key to this potential trade has to be that 1st round pick. In my heart of hearts I believe there is no way Morey would take on Lee's contract and give up Asik unless he is getting one of those favorable 1st round picks, and it is one of those picks that he could package in a later deal or use himself in the upcoming draft. Otherwise I agree no one would want Lee or Bass in a later trade.

However, if we do end up just getting a piddling 1st round pick, I'm sure all of Red Nation will be saddened, and it will be the first trade Morey has lost by a large margin.

Bass' contract expires the end of next season so he theoretically could be moved next season when teams are more apt to make a trade for an expiring contract to position themselves for the following season. Still, unless Morey and the Rockets don't believe anything better can be had, the Rockets are getting back 2 players with reasonably solid NBA experience that they can plug in and play as needed. Plus a first round draft pick I assume. Maybe throw in a swap of future 1st round picks in addition if the Celtics are unwilling to give up a more valuable 1st round pick.

Still, a very valid point in that neither Bass or Lee will be easy to trade away so soon, if ever (at least until the final year of their contracts when expiring contracts become more valuable).

With all the injury issues the Rockets have dealt with thus far this season, one has to assume better depth is going to come in handy. Whether either Bass or Lee (or both) can become valuable rotation players in the playoffs will be determined by their playing success coming off the bench during the regular season as I see it.

I think the other concern is that Asik continues losing value over the next couple of months when the real Trade Deadline hits. By then, more than 60-65% of the season will have been played and Asik's contract becomes more of an albatross.

If there was any way to retain Asik and gain his trust and full commitment, then that would be the best move forward. However, Asik will never be happy backing up D12 and the Rockets certainly aren't about to bench D12 to give Asik more playing time, etc. The twin towers lineup, more than ever, seems to be dead.

So what other choice(s) do the Rockets really have other than go ahead and trade Asik now?

this is the kinda deal i was afraid of that he would settle for

  • Cooper says 6 months ago If morey can pull one of the nets picks they have it would be more palatable. Lees contract is ugly but he also fills a sizeable hole that there isn't a large trade market available
