Sabrina Ionescu, the celebrated player from New York Liberty, clinched her second WNBA three-point contest title on Friday night in Indianapolis. In the final round, she impressively scored 30 points, matching the second-highest score in the history of the WNBA three-point contest. The record of 37 points, which she set herself in 2023, remains unbeaten.

Ionescu did not participate in last year’s WNBA three-point contest. However, she did take part in another shooting competition, facing off against Steph Curry in Indianapolis during the NBA All-Star weekend in 2024.

During that event, Curry secured a win by scoring 29 points in the final round, just edging out Ionescu who had 26 points. This close defeat fueled her determination to succeed in the same city this year.

“It means everything. Last time I was here in Indy against Steph, I lost,” she expressed, while holding her new trophy during an ESPN broadcast. “I felt compelled to come back and redeem myself.”

After the victory, she even called the NBA’s all-time leader in three-pointers to show off her trophy.

“I called Steph afterwards and was showing off the trophy because he beat me last time we were here in Indy,” Ionescu shared with Deyscha Smith of The Next.

She also celebrated with Curry’s iconic “night night” gesture:

In the final, she defeated Allisha Gray, who was the champion of last year’s three-point contest, where Gray ended with 22 points. Both Ionescu and Gray had scored 25 points in the initial round to make it to the finals. Ionescu has now become only the second WNBA player to win multiple three-point contests, joining Allie Quigley, a four-time winner.

Earlier in the evening, Ionescu’s teammate Natasha Cloud triumphed in the skills challenge, marking a victorious night for New York. Looking ahead, Ionescu is set to compete in the All-Star Game on Saturday against her teammate Breanna Stewart.
