Following a rigorous offseason, Luka Doncic appears to be in excellent shape.

Featured in a recent Men’s Health magazine cover story, the Lakers guard, who became a hot topic due to his weight after a high-profile trade to Los Angeles in February, opened up about his comprehensive offseason training plan, his strict diet, and his overall body conditioning in preparation for the upcoming NBA season.

“If I quit now,” the future basketball legend remarked to the publication, “then all my efforts would have been wasted.”

To achieve peak fitness, Doncic endures two training sessions a day, adheres to a gluten-free and low-sugar diet, and consumes over 250 grams of protein daily. This regimen is meticulously planned out by his three-person ‘Team Luka’, which includes a physiotherapist, a personal trainer, and a nutritionist. Additionally, he follows an intermittent fasting schedule, not eating from 8:30 p.m. until noon the next day.

“Physically, I’d say my entire physique has improved,” Doncic commented on his transformed appearance.

Right after last season concluded with the Lakers being decisively eliminated from the playoffs by the formidable Minnesota Timberwolves, Doncic wasted no time and contacted his manager Lara Beth Seager the very next day to kick-start his workout regimen.

“I always aim to improve different aspects each summer,” he explained. “I’m naturally competitive. This summer felt a bit different, it really pushed me to aim even higher.”

Remarkably, this new regime also meant taking a complete month off from basketball to let his body recuperate fully from the sport’s demands. Initially reluctant, Luka eventually agreed to this break, filling his time with weight training and casual sports such as pickleball and padel.

“It was tough at the start,” Doncic admitted about the hiatus. “I can’t live without basketball. But as a kid, I played many sports.”

He also maintained his competitive spirit in these more relaxed games. “There were moments of frustration when we lost,” he continued, “but I didn’t lose often.”

Ultimately, Doncic is set on maintaining this intense level of commitment and focus on his health, inspired by NBA legends like Michael Jordan and Kobe Bryant. He even believes his vertical leap may have improved after all the training with Team Luka.

“We’ve made significant progress this year,” he noted. “But this is just the beginning. I’ve got to keep pushing forward. I can’t stop now.”
