Karl-Anthony Towns has parted ways with the Minnesota Timberwolves.
In a major three-team deal that was finalized on Wednesday, the Timberwolves, New York Knicks, and Charlotte Hornets confirmed the trade. Towns is set to start his next chapter in New York, while guard Donte DiVincenzo and forward Julius Randle will make their way to Minnesota, taking center stage in the trade.
Following the trade announcement, Towns expressed his gratitude towards the Minnesota community through a heartfelt message and video shared on social media.
“Nine years ago, I came to Minnesota as a young man full of dreams,” Towns stated. “I never imagined that this place would become my home and its residents my family. The love, support, and steadfast loyalty you have shown me have propelled my career and motivated me to become the best player possible.
“To the amazing fans, your encouragement has been invaluable to me. It has bolstered my strength both on and off the court. I will forever remember it. … You will always occupy a special place in my heart. Thank you for everything.”

Chosen first overall in the 2015 NBA draft, Towns spent nine seasons with the Timberwolves. He earned the NBA Rookie of the Year title for the 2015-16 season and maintained perfect attendance until his fourth season.
A four-time All-Star, Towns was instrumental in ending the team’s 13-year playoff drought in 2018 and their advance to the Western Conference finals in 2024.
Throughout his initial seven NBA seasons, Towns witnessed the turnover of five coaches and seven general managers in the Timberwolves’ front office. Despite these challenges, he demonstrated his commitment to the franchise by signing extensions in 2018 and again in 2022 to stay in the Twin Cities.
The Knicks are scheduled to play at the Target Center on December 19, which is anticipated to be a highly emotional evening for both Towns and the Timberwolves supporters.
