Giannis Antetokounmpo, the standout forward for the Milwaukee Bucks, has made a significant impact in the NBA over recent years. Since his entry into the league, he has risen to be among the top players, showcasing his dominance on the basketball court.

Antetokounmpo’s unique playing style, characterized by his physical prowess, has been a key factor in transforming the Bucks into one of the league’s foremost teams, highlighted by their 2021 championship win.

However, Antetokounmpo has aspirations that extend beyond his NBA career, including playing internationally. Following the Bucks’ triumph in the NBA Cup against the Oklahoma City Thunder, he discussed this ambition with Sport24.

“After watching the national team’s highlights post-Olympic qualifiers with Thanasis, I realized how much I appreciated playing in Europe. I wondered aloud if I could play there in the next 5-7 years. Yes, I seriously considered it. The NBA involves constant physical contact over its 82-game season. In Europe, my style is just as effective.”

“The games in Europe are shorter, involve more strategy, and don’t always require the ball in my hands. I often play off-ball, making cuts to the basket. I’ve also had incredible playmakers like Thomas Walkup, Nick Calathes, and Toliopoulos who could find me effortlessly. It’s gentler on my body.”

“I even mentioned to Thanasis that despite the significant financial rewards of the NBA, I might consider playing in Europe if the conditions were right. He was quite surprised and asked if I was serious. I confirmed it, noting it would also mean being closer to family. I’m familiar with the European style; it’s what I grew up with. But for now, I’m committed to the Bucks. We just won the Cup and are looking strong.”

Seeing Antetokounmpo play in Europe after his NBA career would not only be exciting but would also likely boost viewership in Europe and allow him to be closer to his home country, Greece.

For the time being, Antetokounmpo remains with the Bucks. Yet, the possibility of him moving to play in Europe seems plausible as he contemplates the next phases of his career. At 30, he might still have a few years of peak performance left.

Advancements in sports medicine could potentially extend his career well into his 40s, though it appears he might wrap up his professional basketball career outside the NBA.
