Last season, Bradley Beal’s scoring average dipped to its lowest in eight years during his inaugural year with the Phoenix Suns, a time marred by several injuries. Despite this, his mid-2023 trade to the Suns marked a significant move, even though it seemingly had minimal effect on Beal himself.

In a recent episode of the Run Your Race podcast hosted by G-League player Theo Pinson and his companion, AJ Richardson, Beal discussed the sequence of events that culminated in his departure from the Washington Wizards.

“I never saw Phoenix as a potential destination. Their interest came completely out of the blue,” Beal revealed.

Beal indicated that prior to the trade, two other teams had serious discussions with the Wizards.

“I was anticipating moves from the Miami Heat and the Milwaukee Bucks, those were my preferred choices,” Beal said. “Miami pulled out, and I wasn’t too keen on Milwaukee’s decision to trade [forward Khris] Middleton. They might not appreciate my openness about this, but it’s the truth.”

Beal mentioned that Middleton chose not to exercise his player option, which was a prerequisite for any potential trade involving the Bucks and the Wizards to proceed.

“Trading someone who was instrumental in winning a championship in 2021 didn’t sit well with me—the idea lacks loyalty,” Beal commented.
