#48961 The Roster

Posted by Buckko on 29 August 2015 - 09:22 PM

So the 15 man roster should come out to be

Lawson/Beverley/Terry

Harden/Thorton/KJ

Ariza/Brewer/Dekker

Jones/Dmo/Harrell

Howard/Capela/Wood

Personal opinions and notes

I am in favor of starting jones over Dmo reason being the fit with Howard on both sides of the ball and he would have much more of a positive impact as the 6th man and focal point of the offense in the post in the 2nd unit rather than be regulated as a stretch 4 to create space with howard. If Dmo were the 6th man he would be the focal point of the offense with more room in the paint being beside a much more mobile big in capela rather than Howard where his post skills and passing ability could be the most impactful and he could demand as many touches as he needed as he wouldn't be competing with howard, harden, lawson all at one time for touches. He would also provide a form of half court offense to a 2nd unit of beverley/brewer/thorton/ capela/KJ/Ariza that will most likely rely on transition and fast breaks to create offense. His ability to camp in the post and then pass to a shooter, cutter ,or a lob threat would be very important surrounded by those players. On defense Dmo would be able to be the paint protector and position/vertical defending center while capela who is far more mobile than howard could guard the stretch/play making 4s on the perimeter who Dmo does have trouble with chasing around the perimeter when playing next to howard. Dmo is also terrible as a help defender next to howard, while defending as the center in the 2nd unit, he wouldn't have to worry as much as a help defender while Capela could be a nightmare weakside shot blocker like ibaka in the 2nd unit.

On to Jones, even though he has pooped the bed in the playoffs and seem to be physically and mentally affected this past season due to injuries. Stats have usually favored the howard/jones pairing to the Howard/dmo pairing. Reason being is Jones is a great utility PF and garbage man needed next to H&H. Low usage, high efficiency role player. He can slash to the basket when needed from the perimeter or dive into the paint for an offensive rebound and put back, or lob. He can handle the ball in transition which is a plus in our high octane offense. His 3pt shooting while small sample size was nearing next to average last year, so he can also still be that playmaking 4 next to howard. While on defense jones has the ability to guard 4s along the perimeter and act as a weakside help defender and shot blocker. This allows howard to be the man in the middle on defense.

Other notes is I hope Howard only plays 30 minutes or less with capela getting at least 18 minutes a game. It will be such an unfair advantage for the rockets to have 2 elite defending, shot blocking monsters in the middle.

Dekker, Wood, harrell will be vipers all season unless injuries strike. By the way the vipers should have the best frontcourt in the D-league with SF Dekker PF Harrell C Wood. We could be looking at another D-league title with our next nba title.

I think we sign harrell to a 3 year deal and just eat the hard cap for the year. He will be an impactful player in the nba with his game, motor, athleticism, and length. It's just not worth it to risk losing him in a couple years for a chance at getting a buy-out drop out player later in the season. Very unlikely josh smith caliber players are available during every buyout time.

Lawson will obviously start and that offensive 1-2 punch of him and harden will be completely unmatched in the league. We've put together the best SG, a top 10 PG, both top 10 offensive players, and the top 2 most potent, efficient slashers and passers in the league along with both being great shooters and off the ball players. Harden is the perfect embodiment of Moreyball while Lawson is right behind him. That's going to be a damn offense to watch even without mentioning they'll be surrounded by good shooting and cutting wings and bigs great for drop off passes or lob threats. Damn. I do expect them to have their minutes level out so at least one is on the court at all time.

Beverley is going to go back to that high energy in small amount of minutes terror, taking every backup PG's lunch money and we can all love him again. He should also have a healthier season as well, as his style of game is not meant for starter minutes, too much wear and tear on the body with such high energy and intensity.

We are so deep and talented, I can only see GS, the cavs, and maybe OKC challenging us.

It's been a long time since I've had a long post here, hope yall enjoyed it. Roster Rant over.

#45554 The Durant dream is dead.

Posted by Buckko on 18 November 2014 - 11:27 PM

Turiaf is great statistically and if the rockets trade for brewer, best case scenario is they include Turiaf in that trade too to fill the backup center. His contract is 1.6m which added with brewer's 4.7m easily fits in the Lin trade exception. The wolves might be incline to trade him with the center minutes being filled by Pek and IMO a future premier center in dieng.

#44763 Houston Rockets awarded Earl Clark on waiver claim

Posted by Buckko on 26 October 2014 - 06:11 AM

The rockets just wanted to meet their quota of 3 camp cuts sign to the D-league. First Mitchell, now geruad, and soon Akeem. This gives me one conclusions. Black is getting a roster spot, because if they were to cut him, first priority would be signing him to one the 3 spots with the vipers, and they will soon have those 3 spots filled so he is being kept.

The idea of getting these players to the vipers is any young or undrafted players the rockets might have looked at can now be groomed and tested in their own development team and basketball systems to see if they can become decent role players down the road. Like Daniels who was a success, Covington who has the potential, but failed to do anything with it, and quite a few failures over the years. However if you can get a Daniels gem every couple to few years, I would call that a success and key to building a stable and deep team. I'm glad we're a team ahead of the curve with this minor league like system.

#44116 The Red94 Podcast: On the Jason Terry trade and Rajon Rondo speculation

Posted by Buckko on 09 September 2014 - 01:29 AM

You guys do realize there would be no floor spacing at all with jones and rondo on the floor unless jones decides to turn into Ryan Anderson. Dwight would be mauled by defenders in the post helping off and harden would be swarmed the second he touches the ball. There is a reason people keep bringing up rondo's shooting, it's because floor spacing is everything in the modern nba offense.

Posted by Buckko on 07 September 2014 - 08:07 AM

B.)  RW isn't a point guard any more than Dwade or Allen Iverson. My guess is that people tend to throw him into the PG category because of his height and who he plays next to in rotations.  If Westbrook is a point guard, then so is James Harden.

Well the idea of point guard has changed from traditional pass 1st PG of past styles of the nba. If you wish to stop calling RW a PG and instead a combo scoring guard, then the rule must apply to everyone including dragic, bledsoe, rose, curry, conley, Lillard, Lowery, Irving, ect... The only true pass first PGs left in the league really are rondo, CP, and rubio. If you wish to eliminate the terms PG and SG all together if they no longer suffice to you, then start a petition. I'll be first to sign  :D

People can keep reminding me that he is a bad shooter/scorer and I will continue to remind that his poor shooting didn't seem to interfere with winning an NBA title and dominating games along the way.  Not every player on the court has to be an elite shooter--especially if they have other elite skills to contribute.

True, but the celtics also had good shooters at every position besides PG, including the greatest 3pt shooter of all time in Allen, Garnett in his prime (Who easily is the 3rd best player of the past generation behind duncan and kobe) along with pierce. A stacked bench and an ungodly defense. All of which we do not have, thus I see no value of rondo on a gutted version of this team.

Now my opinion on Jones is if he develops an average corner 3, decent mid range game, better on man/post defense, defensive rebounding/boxing out, and overall defensive awareness. He can be an allstar caliber talent (now he will never be an allstar in the west, because the forward position is so stacked, but talent and skill wise worthy). Now that is a lot of "ifs", but it is possible. We'll just have to wait and see. Then evaluate which I think Morey is doing.

#43902 Houston Rockets' summer assignment list: Part 3, Dwight Howard

Posted by Buckko on 21 August 2014 - 06:18 AM

I don't about the mid-range jumper though. Dwight Howard is who he is a shot blocker, post move extraordinaire and that;s about it. Robin Lopez let D12 push him around because the Blazers only had to worry about H & H because they were playing too much one on one basketball. I wish McHale would make his team move the ball a lot! I like Howard but what he did in the playoffs was awesome. Just like you said hopefully he can carry that to next season's playoffs, oh and Harden better be more efficient and not hesitant! #RedNation

The midrange jumper could be huge, besides the fact it adds to dwight's versatility, and stretching the floor more and adding room for our drivers (harden), it can massively prolong his career like duncan.

#43303 The problem with Parsons

Posted by Buckko on 30 July 2014 - 02:23 AM

The best PF in the game and top 5 player ever along with arguably the best coach ever don't grow on trees. It makes things much easier when you do have them. Unfortunately if you don't you're stuck with the other 28 teams in the same boat

You wouldn't have known if Dmo would get killed by LMA. LA at least wouldn't have been able to shoot over him like jones.

#42896 What's left on the market for the Rockets?

Monroe can't shoot the 3 and is a horrid defender.

#41241 Houston Rockets' Lebron James and Carmelo Anthony Free Agency Watch: Part 5

Posted by Buckko on 26 June 2014 - 02:43 PM

If you think about it. The rockets got two years out of asik for 5 million apiece and a late lottery. Morey is hustling.

Honestly with the value with the value of 1st round picks as high as they've ever been plus the fact this is an incredibly deep draft. The 25th should be enough and if not, throw in one or two of the rocket's future 2nds because they have a lot of them. Do not trade Dmo or Jones because that's a championship caliber backup frontline and they're just getting better. Plus lin adds a lot of marketability in the asian market and puts butts in the seats for teams looking for both those factors.

I must admit, I am not totally sure why you would rather give up Jones because you're "not at all a fan of low-IQ basketball players."  Does Motiejunas actually possess a higher basketball IQ?  I mean, as much as you have railed about Jones cannot take on the elite power forwards ( rightfully so), Motiejunas would be even worse, and we all know his massive defensive flaws.

Rahat is referring to the fact that jones gets by with his size, athleticism, and cutting/finishing abilities. He is very bad passer, defender, and overall low basketball IQ unlike Dmo who has become a great defender right before our eyes towards the end of the season. He also always keeps the ball moving as stated by the coaches why they like him on the floor. IMO Dmo is due for a breakout season and if he was on the spurs, he would become one their best players. He can shoot the 3, pass and defend very well, always runs the floor hard, great post game, hard working and intelligent player plus he's foreign. For all of the spurs inter-nationality, they lack a Lithuanian. I think Rahat has even said he wonders what Dmo would be under Pop.

#41119 Let's Talk About Defense

Posted by Buckko on 24 June 2014 - 03:44 PM

Harden is NOT a bad defender. He is someone who doesn't care to defend. Completely different. Harden has great attributes and measurements where if he ever wanted to be, I bet he could become an almost shutdown defender. He has an almost a 6'11" wingspan, ( That's Insane for a SG) 6'5+" extremely sturdy frame with great center of gravity and weight. He's probably one, if not the strongest guard in the game along with considerable athleticism, become a wall for post defense. Smart and quick as we've seen him play the passing lane. All of these attributes are important for a great defender, however its a matter if he ever wants to be one.

Posted by Buckko on 05 May 2014 - 08:39 PM

I don't like mchale either, but just ask the nicks how many championships they got from trading their entire roster. The rockets don't have a problem putting the ball in the basket, it's keeping the other guy from putting a ball in theirs.

#37831 Huq's Pen: I'm feeling a little Melo

Posted by Buckko on 20 March 2014 - 10:48 PM

I still have the bad feeling would melo willing give up the alpha role. You can discuss Olympic melo all you want, but those are closer to pick up games than real NBA. Would melo willing become the next wade? I do have to say though, if the heat don't 3peat and with health and age against Miami. Wouldn't you try for lebron? Nice climate and no income tax like Flordia. A very young and healthy team. Lebron being much more of a play maker than scorer in melo would demand far less shots from H&H. He's already accustom to playing with an elite 2-guard. Food for thought.

#32021 Hypothetical: Would you trade Lin and Asik for Carmelo?

Posted by Buckko on 07 December 2013 - 03:37 AM

Agreed, but LIn and asik would be easy starters on many teams and gives the rockets a great advantage which many teams don't have. We can beat you with the starters and dominate the second unit along with keeping your starters rested and healthy. Don't underestimate the power of a bench.
