What better way to celebrate an outstanding Rookie of the Year season than with an exclusive trading card?
Topps is gearing up to launch a novel product named Mercury, dedicated entirely to Victor Wembanyama, the company disclosed to Sports Illustrated. According to Topps, this is the most extensively distributed set centered on a single athlete that they have ever produced.
Rather than being just another standard pack or a coveted hobby box, this release is a top-tier luxury product aimed at the most devoted collectors. Priced at $8,000, each pack contains eight cards, each individually wrapped in foil and presented in a magnetic case bearing the brand’s logo.
Here’s an outline of what you can expect to find in this collection:
- 20 standard cards
- Limited edition base card short prints (only 45 copies each)
- 45 cards in French, each numbered
- 10 different autograph card designs, some featuring inscriptions (numbered inserts). All signatures are directly on the cards
- Jersey relics
- Ultra-rare dual on-card autographs with David Robinson, LeBron James, and C.J. Stroud, limited to 10 copies or fewer
Named Mercury partly because it is the closest planet to the sun, this product will celebrate notable debut seasons and plans to include rookies from various sports in the future. Additionally, the name reflects another aspect: liquid silver, which is the inspiration for the card’s color scheme.
The 2023-24 Mercury series will be available directly from Topps starting October 9, with Fanatics Live hosting a breaking event on October 8.
