The number 44 on the Lakers’ jerseys is a tribute to the late Jerry West, who passed away at the age of 86 in June. West spent the majority of his NBA career with the Lakers, both on and off the court. Known for his silhouette being used as the NBA logo, West was a formidable player, later a coach, and then an executive for the Lakers for many years. Even though he concluded his NBA career with other teams, his legacy is permanently tied to his accomplishments in Los Angeles, where he wore the number 44 as a player.
Initially selected by the then-Minneapolis Lakers as the second overall pick in the 1960 NBA Draft following his time as a two-time All-American at West Virginia, West developed into one of the NBA’s all-time great point guards. His career highlights include 14 All-Star appearances, 10 first-team All-NBA selections, two second-team selections, leading the Lakers to an NBA championship in 1972, and earning the NBA Finals MVP in 1969 despite the Lakers losing to the Boston Celtics. He played all 14 seasons of his professional career with the Lakers.
Following his retirement as a player, West took over as the Lakers’ head coach in 1976, a role he held for three years. He then served as a scout before being promoted to general manager prior to the 1982-83 season. During his tenure as general manager, West was instrumental in building the “Showtime” Lakers dynasty that captured five championships in the 1980s.
After a period of challenges in the early 1990s, West revitalized the Lakers by signing Shaquille O’Neal as a free agent, orchestrating a trade for Kobe Bryant’s draft rights, and persuading Phil Jackson to become the head coach in 1999. This leadership led to three consecutive championships from 2000 to 2002.
Post-Lakers Career of Jerry West
In 2002, West left the Lakers to accept the general manager position with the Memphis Grizzlies, seeking new challenges. He transformed the Grizzlies from an underperforming team into a competitive one, earning the NBA Executive of the Year award in 2004 before retiring in 2007.
West joined the Golden State Warriors as a board member in 2011, contributing to the assembly of another formidable team. Under his guidance, the Warriors secured their first championship in 40 years during the 2014-2015 season and another in the 2016-2017 season, marking the seventh and eighth championships won by teams with West as an executive.
In June 2017, West took on a role as a board member with the Los Angeles Clippers, where he concluded his illustrious career after several years with the organization.
