Russell Westbrook’s Jersey Number Request and Clarification

On Monday, news surfaced that Russell Westbrook’s desire to wear the No. 0 jersey for the Denver Nuggets was not fulfilled due to Christian Braun, a current player for the team, who has been wearing that number since he started his NBA career in the 2022-23 season.

Westbrook took to his Instagram story on Tuesday to address these rumors. He urged people to stop bothering his young teammate. “Let’s please leave our young star alone,” Westbrook stated. He further clarified that there was no discussion or request on his part for Braun to relinquish the No. 0 jersey. Instead, Westbrook expressed his decision to embrace a new number as a symbol of starting a fresh chapter.

Westbrook also commented on the rampant spread of misinformation, especially with the excitement surrounding the new NBA season. “The excitement of the new season has already begun, and unfortunately I know that means the offload of many false stories. Not today! [Braun] and I are locked in and ready to get things rockin’ in the mile high city!” he added, dismissing the rumors and showing his enthusiasm for the upcoming season.

Russell Westbrook has historically been associated with the No. 0 jersey, wearing it throughout his NBA career except during his 2020-21 season with the Washington Wizards, where he wore No. 4. He also wore No. 0 during his college days at UCLA.

On the other hand, Christian Braun, before joining the NBA, wore No. 2 during his collegiate stint at Kansas. Post his draft selection by Denver as the 21st pick in 2022, Braun switched to No. 0, a number he wore back in high school at Blue Valley Northwest in Overland Park, Kansas.

Despite the jersey number they wear, both Westbrook and Braun are focused on their collaboration in Denver, aiming to drive the Nuggets towards success in the NBA Finals following their previous season’s shortfall in the Western Conference semifinals.
