Basketball Hall of Famer Dominique Wilkins has expressed dissatisfaction with the way modern NBA players refer to their predecessors.

During his recent appearance on the All the Smoke podcast, Wilkins shared his concerns about the current generation’s respect for former players.

“You know what? We respect all eras,” Wilkins stated. “We had our teachers too, learning from those who came before us. We always respected and appreciated basketball in all its forms. …The thing is, it’s their era now. We’ve had ours. But it bothers me when they diminish our achievements just to make their point. There’s no need for that. Greatness transcends eras. You shouldn’t have to belittle past generations to prove your worth because we never did that.”

Wilkins emphasized that he would never disparage the legends who paved the way in basketball.

“I would never claim to be superior to Wilt Chamberlain or Bill Russell or Oscar Robertson. Those players taught us great lessons and we learned so much from them,” added Wilkins.

The conversation about NBA players invariably spans different eras, discussing how they might match up against each other. However, the true answer to these questions will likely remain unknown.

As Wilkins pointed out, “Great is great,” suggesting that appreciation should be given to each generation for their unique contributions and accomplishments without comparing them.
