The San Antonio Spurs’ strategy in the upcoming free agency period will be particularly fascinating as they aim to build a competitive team around their promising young talent, Victor Wembanyama.

Last season, the Spurs ended with a record of 34-48. Unfortunately, Wembanyama was sidelined for a considerable part of the latter half due to deep vein thrombosis, which significantly affected the team’s performance.

Looking ahead, there’s a sense of optimism for the next season. The team will welcome back important players such as De’Aaron Fox, Devin Vassell, Keldon Johnson, and Harrison Barnes. Chris Paul is the only major player becoming a free agent, which provides the Spurs with some flexibility to enhance their roster either through subtle additions or significant starting lineup changes if opportunities arise.

As reported by Jake Fischer on Marc Stein’s Substack newsletter, the Spurs are set to target Guerschon Yabusele, currently with the Philadelphia 76ers. Yabusele, a French player, has previously played with Wembanyama at the 2024 Paris Olympics.

Fischer also noted that San Antonio might show interest in Luke Kornet. Both the Sixers and the Milwaukee Bucks are expected to vie with the Spurs for the French forward’s services.
