Russell Westbrook Updates Jersey Number

Russell Westbrook is donning a new jersey number this season, though it’s not the one he initially hoped for.

After inking a two-year contract worth $6.77 million with the Denver Nuggets this offseason, the 35-year-old Westbrook desired to wear his longtime NBA jersey number. However, he found himself unable to claim his preferred number as it was already occupied by another player on the team.

Jersey Negotiations

According to DNVR Sports’ Harrison Wind, Westbrook attempted to persuade Christian Braun, the current holder of the No. 0 jersey, to give it up, but the third-year guard declined Westbrook’s request. Subsequently, Westbrook negotiated with Hunter Tyson, a second-year forward, who agreed to change his jersey from No. 4 to No. 5, allowing Westbrook to take over No. 4. Notably, Tyson did not request any compensation for this change.

Throughout his career, Westbrook has predominantly worn No. 0. He sported this number from his rookie season in 2008-09 with the Oklahoma City Thunder up until the 2018-19 season. He continued wearing No. 0 with the Houston Rockets during the 2019-20 season, before switching to No. 4 in 2020-21 with the Washington Wizards. He then returned to No. 0 during his tenure with the Los Angeles Lakers from 2021 until 2023, and maintained it when he moved to the Los Angeles Clippers for the latter part of the 2022-23 season and into the 2023-24 season. Westbrook also wore No. 0 during his college days at UCLA.

Seeing Westbrook in a jersey number other than his iconic No. 0 will certainly be an adjustment for fans, but Christian Braun’s decision to retain his jersey number is a commendable stand for his rights.
