City Councilman Manny Pelaez took steps on Wednesday to initiate renaming the San Antonio International Airport in honor of Popovich, acknowledging the significant influence the former Spurs coach has had on the community.
“The influence of Coach Popovich on our city is beyond measure,” Pelaez stated in his proposal. “His legendary coaching brought not just unprecedented success but also made him a profoundly respected and cherished member of our community.”
“As our city expands and continues to greet global visitors via the San Antonio International Airport, it seems only fitting to dedicate this important point of entry to Coach Gregg Popovich. Changing the airport’s name to ‘Gregg Popovich International Airport’ would be a permanent tribute to his remarkable legacy and the significant positive impact he has made on our city and beyond.”
“I firmly believe Popovich deserves to have his name on an iconic structure,” added Pelaez, who is nearing the end of his term after an unsuccessful mayoral run, according to the San Antonio Express-News.
The councilman further remarked, “Popovich has significantly elevated San Antonio’s profile on the international stage. Naming one of our key assets after him is entirely appropriate.”
Significantly, Popovich’s background includes attendance at the Air Force Academy and five years of service in the United States Air Force prior to his NBA career, which adds a deeper significance to the airport renaming.
Apart from Pelaez’s suggestion, another council member, Teri Castillo, has proposed that January 28—Popovich’s birthday—be designated “Coach Pop Day” in San Antonio.
Popovich, aged 76, retired as head coach of the Spurs in early May following a stroke in November. His coaching career with the Spurs spanned 29 seasons.
