The Los Angeles Lakers have solidified their future prospects by signing Luka Doncic to a substantial three-year contract extension worth $165 million, ensuring his stay with the team until at least the 2028 season. Additionally, the deal includes a player option for the 2028-29 season, which could allow him to sign another maximum contract potentially exceeding $400 million.

This significant commitment to Doncic occurred six months after the Lakers acquired him in a surprising trade with the Dallas Mavericks, positioning him as the cornerstone of the franchise’s future. This strategic move aligns with the twilight years of LeBron James’s illustrious NBA career. James has committed to his $52.6 million player option with the Lakers for the upcoming season and has expressed his intention to closely watch the team’s moves during the offseason, aiming to contend for a championship in his final years.

Following a disappointing exit from the playoffs last season, where the Lakers were defeated by the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games during the first round, James’s aspirations to vie for a championship remain undeterred. With the Lakers looking towards future and immediate success, it remains uncertain whether James will continue his pursuit in Los Angeles. The announcement of Doncic’s extension prompted Rob Pelinka, the Lakers’ general manager and president of basketball operations, to express his hopes for James’s future with the team.

“Having him retire as a Laker would be ideal,” Pelinka mentioned in an interview with ESPN’s Dave McMenamin.

With James opting into his player option for the upcoming season, he will stay with the Lakers. However, he retains the option to request a trade if he believes the Lakers are not positioned to immediately contend for a championship. After this season, he will become an unrestricted free agent, free to sign with any team that aligns with his championship aspirations, whether it remains the Lakers or another contender.

As James approaches the end of his NBA career, Pelinka is hopeful that James will buy into the Lakers’ vision for immediate competitiveness, especially with Doncic secured for the foreseeable future.
