In response, the Pacers have begun exploring the trade market for reinforcements and are expected to be quite active. The team must carefully weigh their options, balancing the desire to push for immediate success against the need to maintain a healthy long-term outlook.
Recently, Dan Favale of Bleacher Report suggested a trade that could address two of the Pacers’ key weaknesses. He proposed a trade between the Pacers and the Brooklyn Nets that would bring both a wing player and a big man to Indiana.
Under this proposed trade, Indiana would acquire forward Dorian Finney-Smith and center Day’Ron Sharpe from the Nets. In exchange, Brooklyn would receive forwards Obi Toppin and Jarace Walker from the Pacers.
Finney-Smith, who earns $14.9 million this season and has a player option for $15.3 million the following year, would bring a higher salary to the Pacers. However, this move could also alleviate some longer-term financial commitments, particularly Toppin’s contract.
The veteran forward could significantly bolster Indiana’s lineup, enhancing their defensive capabilities and providing reliable 3-point shooting. Finney-Smith is currently averaging 10.0 points, 5.0 rebounds, 1.6 assists, and 1.2 steals per game.
With a shooting accuracy of 34.5 percent from the three-point line, his performance could see an uptick playing alongside a proficient passer like Tyrese Haliburton.
Adding Finney-Smith’s experience could be invaluable for a relatively young Pacers squad, providing leadership and insight gained over his years in the league.
The addition of Sharpe would also strengthen Indiana’s frontcourt, particularly useful since the team has lost two centers this year. Sharpe, who is currently sidelined with a hamstring injury, showed promise last season with averages of 6.8 points, 6.4 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game.
Such strategic acquisitions could significantly enhance the Pacers’ competitive edge as they gear up for the playoffs.
