The streaming giant has announced a price increase in the United States amid a surge in subscriber numbers. What about France?

Things are looking bright for Netflix. On Tuesday, January 21, 2025, the streaming platform announced it had surpassed 300 million subscribers globally, as reported by CNN. In the last quarter of 2024 alone, the industry titan added a record 19 million new subscribers, bringing its total to 302 million worldwide. This surge in subscribers is attributed to the popularity of shows like Squid Game and events such as the Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul match.

However, subscribers may not be smiling for long. Netflix has also declared a price increase in the United States, Canada, Argentina, and Portugal. The standard subscription will jump from $15.49 per month to $17.99 per month. The premium subscription is increasing by $2, reaching $24.99 per month. Even the standard plan with ads is seeing a price hike, now costing $7.99 per month. The streaming platform explains that the price rise is due to its desire to “invest” more in new programs and to deliver “high-quality content” to “enhance” the Netflix experience.

France Remains Unaffected For Now

But what about France? As of now, the streaming platform has not announced any price increases in France, and French subscribers are not yet affected by this hike.

Yet, it’s hard to say it will never happen. Historically, the streaming platform’s pricing strategy shows that increases usually follow a few months after those in the United States. While it’s not a certainty, it’s not implausible that a hike might be announced in France in the coming months.

The last price rise for Netflix subscriptions in France occurred in the fall of 2023, which notably included the elimination of the Essential subscription. Remember, the current rates in France are as follows: the ad-supported subscription costs 5.99 euros per month, the standard ad-free subscription costs 13.49 euros per month, while the premium option is priced at 19.99 euros per month.
