Strategic Expansion of NBA Playoff Schedules for Maximum Revenue
Over the past few years, the NBA has strategically extended the duration of each playoff round. This deliberate pacing is primarily aimed at increasing television revenue.
This common practice, however, continues to frustrate many NBA enthusiasts.
Ideally, the playoff schedule would consist of playing games every two nights, followed by a rest day, and then repeating the cycle. Nevertheless, the NBA avoids scheduling back-to-back games.
Thus, a more appropriate schedule would be one that allows a day off after each game day. Yet, such a schedule would not be as profitable for the league.
As a result, the scheduling for the conference semifinals, which kicked off with the Indiana Pacers–Cleveland Cavaliers game last Sunday, includes unusually long breaks. For instance, two series are experiencing a couple of three-day interruptions, while the series between the Golden State Warriors and Minnesota Timberwolves includes a staggering four-day break.
The series between the Denver Nuggets and Oklahoma City Thunder will see a three-day break between Game 6 (May 15) and Game 7 (May 18).
The Warriors-Timberwolves series includes a four-day hiatus between Game 5 (May 14) and Game 6 (May 18).
The Pacers-Cavs series features two three-day breaks: one between Game 2 (May 6) and Game 3 (May 9), and another between Game 6 (May 15) and Game 7 (May 18).
The New York Knicks–Boston Celtics series will have a three-day gap both between Game 3 (May 7) and Game 4 (May 10), and between Game 6 (May 16) and Game 7 (May 19).
Ultimately, the extended breaks in any series lack a solid justification beyond the financial gain they bring to the league.
Memorable Moments in Sports Broadcasting
The local radio commentary by Winnipeg Jets analyst Mitchell Clinton on Cole Perfetti’s game-tying goal during the final 1.6 seconds of Game 7 against the St. Louis Blues was nothing short of electrifying.
Record-Breaking Viewership for the Kentucky Derby
