The Dallas Mavericks have been a central topic in NBA discussions for several months following the unexpected trade involving Luka Doncic to the Los Angeles Lakers, the ongoing injury concerns surrounding Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving, and notably, the team’s recent success in securing the first overall pick in the upcoming NBA draft in June.
Looking ahead to the next season, the Mavericks are set to build around a key group including Davis, Irving (who will rejoin the team after recovering from a torn ACL), and likely the standout young talent Cooper Flagg from Duke, whom the Mavericks are poised to pick first in the draft.
Assuming Flagg lives up to his potential, and with Davis and Irving back to full health, the Mavericks are expected to form a competitive team capable of making a strong run in the highly competitive Western Conference. The fortunate outcome of the draft lottery night has set the stage for the often-criticized general manager Nico Harrison to adopt a more assertive approach, a move anticipated by NBA expert Marc Stein.
“According to league insiders, Dallas is likely to investigate potential trade opportunities for Boston’s Jrue Holiday, despite the complexities due to the remaining three years and $104 million on Holiday’s contract. They are also keeping an eye on a more attainable trade option mentioned in the DLLS Mavs podcast: Lonzo Ball. Additionally, keep an eye on Chris Paul, who just celebrated his 40th birthday on May 6 and has just completed a full season of playing and starting in all 82 games for the San Antonio Spurs,” Stein reported.
Despite his age, Holiday could offer Dallas significant benefits considering his proven durability and performance as he moves into his mid-30s. Although Holiday had a less impressive second year with Boston, he remains a solid player when fit. However, his hefty contract might pose a challenge, as Stein pointed out.
After multiple seasons sidelined by a knee injury, Lonzo Ball made a comeback showing he can still compete at the professional level, though concerns about his injury history persist. Paul, the oldest among them, may be beyond his peak years, yet the future Hall-of-Famer continues to show remarkable productivity in the latter stages of his career.
