Following a season where he participated in all 82 games, Chris Paul, now concluding his 20th season in the NBA, might be considering a change of scenery for his 21st year. As an unrestricted free agent, Paul wrapped up his one-year stint with the San Antonio Spurs, where he was brought on board to guide the youthful team led by Victor Wembanyama.

However, the Spurs’ recent focus on recruiting guards whose career trajectories align more closely with Wembanyama’s development could lead Paul to explore options elsewhere during this offseason. NBA expert Marc Stein has indicated that Paul is a key player to watch, particularly for the Dallas Mavericks who are recovering from the loss of Kyrie Irving due to an ACL injury in March. Although it’s uncertain if Paul will end up in Dallas, Stein has suggested that Paul’s tenure with the Spurs is likely over after his one-year contract.

Stein expressed in The Stein Line that there’s a growing expectation of Paul possibly relocating this offseason despite a successful period mentoring Wembanyama and the young team. Stein pointed out, “The reality is that the Spurs brought in De’Aaron Fox in February and witnessed Stephon Castle having a standout rookie season.”

The addition of Fox and Castle in the past year suggests that there might be diminishing opportunities for Paul in the Spurs’ roster of guards. Moreover, the Spurs were fortunate in this year’s NBA draft lottery, securing the No. 2 pick, which they reportedly plan to use on Dylan Harper from Rutgers, considered the top guard in the draft.

Stein noted, “Whether or not Harper joins the Spurs, it seems unlikely there will be space for Paul in their guard lineup next season.”

With the influx of new guard talent, it appears Paul’s time with the Spurs is drawing to a close. Last season, the 40-year-old guard played in every game, averaging 8.8 points and 7.4 assists.
