During an appearance on Jalen Brunson’s podcast, Roommates Show, Cuban discussed a shift in Thompson’s role which suggests a decreased reliance on him in Dallas’s offensive scheme.
Unlike his active, constant motion in the Golden State Warriors’ fluid offense, Cuban mentioned that Thompson’s main task for the Mavericks will be much simpler this forthcoming NBA season.
Cuban highlighted the acquisition of Thompson as significant, stating, “Klay is crucial as he demands face guarding and hits 40% of his shots… At Golden State, his role involved a lot of movement; they utilized a motion offense where he was frequently using screens and moving around. Our strategy doesn’t rely as much on that, though we’ll incorporate some elements for him. Primarily, he’ll be positioned on the corner or the wings, simply catching and shooting from passes by Luka and Ky. This should hopefully simplify his game considerably.”
The 34-year-old Thompson, having inked a three-year, $50 million contract with the Mavericks in July, has departed the only NBA team he had ever played for. Last season, he managed a 38.7% success rate from three-point range, one of the few times he fell below the 40% mark during his 13 years with the Warriors.
Despite entering the later stages of his career, Thompson remains a formidable perimeter threat, capable of drawing defensive attention whether starting or coming off the bench. Cuban’s strategy appears geared towards maximizing Thompson’s shooting prowess, especially following a season where his scoring was at its lowest since the 2012-13 season.
