On a Wednesday night, Luka Doncic will make a notable appearance in Dallas, but not in the jersey fans were accustomed to seeing him wear. Although this marks the second occasion Doncic competes against his former team, it will be his first time doing so as a member of the Los Angeles Lakers at his old stomping grounds.

The anticipation for this matchup is unusually high for an April game, highlighted by Tim MacMahon of ESPN in a feature published on the morning of the game. MacMahon’s report sheds light on how the Mavericks intended to welcome their ex-star, who had been rather abruptly traded away, with Doncic’s representatives rejecting at least one proposed idea.

MacMahon detailed that the Mavericks had arranged “lucrative sponsorship deals” with several brands endorsed by Doncic, presumably as a part of the celebrations marking his return to Dallas. However, Doncic’s team was not on board with the plan.

“Team sources told ESPN that the Mavs had also lined up lucrative sponsorship deals for Wednesday’s game, with multiple companies that Doncic endorses,” MacMahon reported, “but those deals fell through after Doncic’s camp declined to participate, clearly indicating that he now represents the Lakers.”

A valid point indeed!

The trade that sent Doncic to Los Angeles was a shocking turn of events, and there’s no illusion about the strained relations between him and the Mavericks. This episode only emphasizes the tension further.

The evening promises to be an exciting one in Dallas— though perhaps not as much for the Mavericks.
