Luka Doncic has agreed to a maximum contract extension with the Los Angeles Lakers, securing a deal worth $165 million over the next three years, which includes a player option for 2028, according to ESPN’s Shams Charania, who reported the news on Saturday.

At 26, Doncic’s unexpected move to the Lakers occurred midway through the last NBA season. His initial stint in the Lakers’ iconic purple and gold, playing alongside LeBron James, was quite successful. Doncic played a pivotal role in driving the team to the playoffs; however, their journey was cut short in the first round when they lost to the Minnesota Timberwolves in five games. During the 2024-25 season, Doncic posted impressive averages of 28.2 points, 8.1 rebounds, and 7.5 assists per game.

Doncic had one more year remaining on his previous maximum contract and could have held off until next summer to potentially sign an even more substantial deal as an unrestricted free agent. However, he chose to affirm his dedication to the Lakers sooner rather than later. With this extension, Doncic is set to stay with the Lakers until 2028, when he will be 29 years old and in a position to negotiate another max contract, potentially nearing $500 million as Charania points out.

With Doncic at the helm, the future of the Lakers looks promising as he is set to become the cornerstone of the franchise while LeBron James approaches the twilight of his NBA career.
