In a conversation on the New Heights podcast hosted by Jason Kelce, a former NFL player, and his brother Travis Kelce, who is currently in the NFL, LeBron James put to rest the rumors about a legendary pickup basketball game that took place in Chicago. As a young teenager, he played alongside the iconic Michael Jordan and several NBA veterans.

The star player for the Los Angeles Lakers went beyond merely confirming the occurrence of the game.

During the podcast, James shared with the Kelce brothers how, at 16, he dominated the court, proving unstoppable against some of the greatest names in basketball.

“First of all, MJ [Michael Jordan], Antoine Walker, and the other older players rarely let the younger ones step foot on the court,” James explained. “I was just a sophomore in high school, and usually, you’d wait for the older guys to tire out before you got a chance to play…”

“But I managed to get on the court, playing alongside Michael Jordan, Antoine Walker, Penny Hardaway, Ron Artest, Michael Finley… All these incredible players.”

When Travis Kelce inquired, “Who was guarding you?”

James, with a straight face, responded, “No one. I was unguardable,” prompting laughter from the Kelce brothers.

“Once I was out there, I was determined to excel. I was incredibly nervous, being on the court with MJ and the others, but I told myself, ‘It’s time to go wild.’ And that’s exactly what I did.”

Metta Sandiford-Artest, a 17-year NBA veteran who also participated in that game at Jordan’s court in Chicago, known as Hoops, commented on James’s remarkable performance on an episode of the Podcast P With Paul George podcast in May 2024.

“Everyone was aware of him. He was already a celebrity, towering over everyone in the gym,” Artest recounted. “When he walked in, I thought, ‘Okay, let’s see what he can do.’ And he was sensational, only 15 or 16 years old, driving to the hoop, posting up.”

“It was clear he was going to be a major problem for any defender,” Artest added.

From a young age, it was evident that James was destined for the NBA. Now, at 40 years old and in his 22nd season, he continues to perform at an elite level in the league.
