At a record of 17–13, the Los Angeles Lakers are actively contending in the playoffs, currently holding the sixth position in the Western Conference. Under the guidance of their new coach, JJ Redick, both LeBron James and Anthony Davis have delivered impressive performances. However, the team still does not appear to be on the same level as NBA championship contenders such as the Oklahoma City Thunder and the reigning champions, the Boston Celtics.

According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, the Lakers are prepared to leverage their draft assets to strengthen their lineup, aiming for a player or players who can complement James and Davis effectively and remain integral to the team’s strategy looking forward.

“Considering the caliber of LeBron James and Anthony Davis, our main focus is how to enhance the team around these two stars,” Charania stated on a recent episode of First Take. “We are keeping an eye on potential sellers like Portland, Washington, Toronto, and possibly Chicago. The Lakers’ front office has indicated to me that they are open to trading. They have three first-round picks available for trade and are looking for players who not only fit well with LeBron and Davis but can also contribute to the team under Coach JJ Redick for the next three to five years,” he added.

The Lakers have the flexibility to trade two of their first-round draft picks, specifically those of 2029 and 2031, in a single transaction. Additionally, their 2030 first-round pick can be traded in another separate deal, as outlined by ESPN’s Bobby Marks. The team can also offer various pick swaps to enhance any trade proposals.

High-caliber players like De’Aaron Fox, Zach LaVine, and former Lakers forward Brandon Ingram are considered ideal fits for the Lakers, aligning with the player profile described by Charania.

The NBA trade deadline is approaching swiftly, set for Feb. 6 at 3 p.m. ET.
