The New York Knicks have secured a new standout player.
Shams Charania of The Athletic reports that the Knicks have completed a trade with the Minnesota Timberwolves for Karl-Anthony Towns. New York will trade Julius Randle and Donte DiVincenzo to Minnesota as part of the exchange, according to Charania.
Furthermore, the Knicks will send a first-round Detroit pick to the Timberwolves. Charania also notes that New York will trade DaQuan Jefferies and additional draft picks to the Charlotte Hornets to make financial room for Towns.
This trade is highly significant for both teams, who are eyeing championship runs this season. Towns, who has been with the NBA for nine seasons—all with Minnesota—is a four-time All-Star. He brings exceptional scoring and shooting skills to a defensively strong Knicks team, having averaged 21.8 points and 8.3 rebounds last season, with a 41.6% three-point shooting accuracy.
In New York, Towns will team up with Jalen Brunson and recent addition Mikal Bridges. This trio aims to extend the Knicks’ recent successes, having reached the Eastern Conference semifinals in the past two seasons without breaking through to the conference finals.
On the other side, the Timberwolves will enhance their roster depth after a standout season in the competitive Western Conference, where they finished third and made it to the conference finals for the first time in twenty years by defeating the reigning champions, the Denver Nuggets.
Randle, who earned All-Star honors last season and will now replace Towns in the Timberwolves’ lineup, averaged 24.0 points, 9.2 rebounds, and five assists per game, despite being limited to 46 games due to injuries.
DiVincenzo is expected to play a similar role in Minnesota as he did in New York. Last season, he had a career-best performance, averaging 15.5 points per game and shooting 40.1% from three-point range.
