By the end of June, the ex-Blue Devil was chosen fourth overall in the 2025 NBA Draft. Since July, he has been participating in summer league games, stepping into the professional arena he has always aspired to join. Adding to his exciting journey, NBA star Klay Thompson has become one of his admirers, courtesy of a personalized video message facilitated by reporter Taylor Rooks.
During an episode of her podcast, which aired on Friday, Rooks presented the video to an astonished Knueppel.

“I just want to wish you the best, and I appreciate you trying to emulate my style of play,” Thompson conveyed to 19-year-old Knueppel. “It makes me feel a bit old, yet I’m grateful for the talented young players like you who are ready to dominate the league and continue what we’ve begun. Your performance last season alongside Cooper and the team was phenomenal, particularly for freshmen. It was truly remarkable, akin to the Fab Five. I’m thrilled about your upcoming chapter in the NBA. Never lose the confidence that has brought you this far, especially in your shooting.”
Thompson later added: “Make the most of your rookie season because it passes quickly. Take care, brother.”
Overwhelmed, Knueppel could only respond with, “That’s awesome,” accompanied by a broad smile.
You can view this memorable moment in the podcast starting at 16:57:
Previously, Knueppel had expressed to reporter Kevin O’Connor his desire to play like Thompson during his NBA career, often watching clips of the Mavericks guard, and mentioning Jimmy Butler as another influence.
Later in the podcast, when Rooks inquired what Knueppel would like her to relay to Thompson, his response was quite humorous.
“I shouldn’t probably say this, but I loved it when he did the ‘big ball’ celebration,” Knueppel admitted. “Tell him that, because it was brilliant. He’s got guts. … And tell him he’s the best off-ball mover ever, even better than Steph, in my view.”
Thompson would surely appreciate that admiration.
