The recent announcement that Karl-Anthony Towns will be moving from the Minnesota Timberwolves to the New York Knicks has left many in the sports community reeling. Known for his significant contributions both on and off the court in the Twin Cities, Towns’ departure is seen as a major loss that is not just practical, but also symbolic.

Towns, however, finds a silver lining in the move as it reunites him with Knicks coach Tom Thibodeau. Thibodeau previously coached Towns at the Timberwolves from 2017 to 2019.

“Having that familiarity gives us a bit of an advantage,” Towns explained to the press on Thursday, according to ESPN’s Chris Herring. “I’m already accustomed to his offensive strategies and defensive expectations.”

During their previous stint together, the team’s performance saw varying success. In 2017, the team had a disappointing 31-51 record, but saw a significant improvement in 2018 with a solid 47-35 record, before dipping again in 2019 with a 36-46 record, a season that also saw Thibodeau’s dismissal in January.

Thibodeau has since achieved notable success with the Knicks, marking a career highlight with a 50-32 record in 2024, his best since his days with the Chicago Bulls in 2015.

“Towns has gained invaluable experience since then, particularly with his deep playoff runs,” Thibodeau commented, per Herring. “It’s one thing to prepare theoretically, but living those experiences transforms your understanding, and he has evolved tremendously since his early years.”
