JJ Redick, the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers, is among the many who have lost their homes due to the catastrophic Palisades Fires in Los Angeles County. The blaze has scorched more than 20,000 acres and has led to the destruction of numerous homes and structures.

While the Lakers were playing away, the fires ignited on Tuesday. Upon hearing the news, Redick’s wife, Chelsea, hurried back to rescue their nanny and children from school and escape the advancing flames. Since his return, Redick has witnessed the extensive damage to what was once his family’s residence.

“I drove up to the Palisades myself because I needed to see the damage firsthand,” Redick recounted on Friday. “The level of destruction was far beyond what I had braced myself for. Our usual routes were blocked, and passing through the village, it was clear that everything was obliterated. Our house was completely destroyed.”

“Everything significant to us—nearly two decades of memories as a couple and a decade as parents—was in that home. Some losses are simply irreplaceable,” he added.

Among the irreplaceable items was a charcoal sketch of a lighthouse drawn by Redick’s son, along with countless other cherished memories of his family. The devastation extended to the local community, particularly the recreation center where Redick was looking forward to coaching his sons’ basketball team this winter.

“Returning to the hotel, both my wife and I were overwhelmed with emotion,” mentioned Redick. “I haven’t cried like that in years… The Palisades community has embraced us warmly.”

Redick praised the Lakers organization for its incredible support during this challenging time. The team’s solidarity was visible when guard Austin Reaves embraced him during a recent practice.

“It’s not just about me; the entire team has shown their care and support for me and my family,” Redick expressed to the media.

The Lakers are set to play the San Antonio Spurs at home on Saturday. Their recent game against the Charlotte Hornets was deferred due to the fires.

“We are ready for whatever comes tomorrow,” stated Redick. “We’ll coordinate with the NBA, the Spurs, and the city to ensure we do what’s right. I’m eager to play and coach tomorrow.”
