In a significant trade, the Los Angeles Lakers acquired Luka Doncic from the Dallas Mavericks, giving up Max Christie, Anthony Davis, and a first-round pick for the year 2029 in return. Even though Christie was traded away, Lakers’ coach J.J. Redick continues to express great admiration for the young guard.

As the Lakers prepare to play against Christie and the Mavericks for the first time since the trade, Redick shared his excitement about Christie’s success in Dallas, mentioning to Jovan Buha of The Athletic that he will continue to follow Christie’s career closely. Redick also recognized that Christie has been given more opportunities to express himself offensively with the Mavericks, a chance he believes Christie would have eventually received had he stayed in Los Angeles.

Before the trade, Christie was a rising star within the Lakers squad. This season, the 22-year-old guard’s playing time increased by over 10 minutes per game, and he started 25 games for the team. Since moving to the Mavericks, his role has grown even more, with his average playing time rising from 25.1 minutes per game to 32.6. His performance metrics have seen a similar rise, going from 8.5 points, 2.7 rebounds, and 1.4 assists per game in Los Angeles to 15.3 points, 4.9 rebounds, and 3.1 assists per game in Dallas.

Given the high regard Redick holds for Christie, it wouldn’t be surprising if the Lakers consider reacquiring him should he become available in the future. For now, Christie continues to excel and develop his skills with the Mavericks.
