As fans continue their seemingly endless wait for her new album, Rihanna remains a hot topic without even trying. The Barbadian star could have been the voice behind one of the decade’s biggest hits: “I played it for her manager.”

The Unseen Music Mogul
Despite her musical hiatus, no artist has generated as much buzz as Rihanna. While she focuses on her cosmetics line, the pop icon often teases fans about her elusive ninth album, which they’ve been anticipating for eight long years. Another frequent topic of discussion is the impressive list of hits she’s turned down. Over the years, Rihanna has passed on songs that later became massive hits for other artists, including Miley Cyrus’s “We Can’t Stop,” Ed Sheeran’s “Shape of You,” Justin Bieber’s “Love Yourself,” Major Lazer’s “Lean On,” Sia’s “Cheap Thrills,” and Beyoncé’s “Pretty Hurts.” Now, we can add another chart-topping track to that list: Glass Animals’ “Heat Waves.”

Released in the summer of 2020, the English band’s song went viral the following year, becoming one of the decade’s most significant hits. It topped the American charts and broke longevity records, amassing over 3 billion streams on Spotify, making it the platform’s 11th most popular song. Dave Bayley, Glass Animals’ lead singer, revealed that Rihanna almost sang the now-famous lines, “Sometimes, all I think about is you / Late nights in the middle of June…”
“In the beginning, it felt too personal and vulnerable for me to sing myself because there’s a little secret in the song that’s very close to me. And it was pretty scary. I hoped it would become someone else’s song,” Bayley told The Independent. He mentioned that the song made it to Roc Nation, Rihanna’s label. “I even went to their office to play the song for her manager. I ended up sending a few snippets of the song, but I’m glad it didn’t go any further. But at the same time, I’m a huge fan and would have loved it!”
Glass Animals’ Meteoric Rise
In hindsight, it’s a blessing in disguise. “Heat Waves” catapulted Glass Animals to international fame. The band recently released their fourth album, “I Love You So F***ing Much,” and Bayley shared his thoughts on the massive success of “Heat Waves” and their previous album, “Dreamland”: “The success of ‘Heat Waves’ and ‘Dreamland’ had a very positive effect. It was the most personal and vulnerable song I had written at the time. Its success gave me the confidence to do it again.”
The thought of Rihanna singing “Heat Waves” is an intriguing “what if” scenario, but ultimately, the song’s journey with Glass Animals has been nothing short of spectacular.
