“Jimmy Butler has expressed through various means that he no longer wishes to remain with our team. Following discussions with him and his agent, we have decided to entertain trade offers,” the Heat confirmed in a statement.
Additionally, the Heat announced a seven-game suspension for Butler due to actions they deemed detrimental to the team.
This decision followed Butler’s remarks on Thursday, where he disclosed he no longer found joy in playing basketball for Miami. When questioned if his joy could be rekindled in Miami, Butler responded negatively. According to ESPN’s Shams Charania, Butler has requested a trade and is willing to join any team.
Despite previously dismissing trade rumors in December, Heat president Pat Riley now faces increased friction with Butler, prompting a reconsideration of Butler’s future with the team.
Butler now tops the list of high-profile players likely to be traded before the February 6 deadline. He is seen as a valuable addition for teams aiming to make a playoff push and possibly secure an NBA title. Potential teams interested in Butler include the Dallas Mavericks, Houston Rockets, Golden State Warriors, and Memphis Grizzlies. Charania had earlier reported in December that Butler’s agent, Bernie Lee, mentioned Butler’s interest in these teams, although Lee later disputed many of these claims.
As Butler prepares to depart from Miami within the next month, it marks the closure of the nearly six-year-long Heat-Butler chapter. During his time in Miami, Butler was selected for the NBA All-Star team twice and led the team to two NBA Finals appearances.
