Electric State: Netflix’s Pricey Film – Is It Worth the Hype? (Review)

Inspired by the graphic novel by Simon Stålenhag, “The Electric State” is the latest high-budget blockbuster from Netflix. But does the significant financial investment pay off?

Netflix has set high expectations for The Electric State, released on March 14, 2025. Loosely adapted from the 2018 graphic novel by Swedish author Simon Stålenhag, it is the latest project by the Russo brothers (Avengers: Endgame, The Gray Man). This retro-futuristic adventure immerses viewers in a conflict between humans and robots. In this scenario, an orphan (Millie Bobby Brown) embarks on a quest to find her missing younger brother with the help of machines and a kind-hearted smuggler (Chris Pratt).

With directors known for their knack for big spectacles and a star-studded cast, it’s no surprise that The Electric State came with a hefty budget. Various American media outlets, including IMDb and Collider, estimate the budget at around $320 million, making it potentially the most expensive film produced by the streaming giant. However, a big budget (which Netflix has not officially confirmed) doesn’t necessarily guarantee a good film.

Our Review of The Electric State

The Electric State certainly had potential. The Russo brothers continue to demonstrate their ability to stage action films that captivate audiences. Visually, the Netflix film delights with the creation of a promising alternate universe, especially in the design of the robots.

However, it’s in the screenplay where the film quickly shows its weaknesses. Despite clearly having rich thematic material (the grip of tech CEOs on the world, how technology isolates us, what defines humanity…), The Electric State only skims the surface. The film’s direction and emotional pulls are predictable from the start. As a result, it fails to resonate.

The film severely lacks heart and personality, consistently failing in its attempts at humor and emotional depth. The fault lies with actors who seem to be on autopilot (Chris Pratt being typical Chris Pratt, Millie Bobby Brown lacking authenticity), uninspired dialogue (“sometimes people are less human than machines”), limited stakes (Michelle’s quest struggles to engage), and a notable lack of pacing or tension to keep the audience engaged. The Electric State lacks soul and joins the long list of forgettable Netflix productions that are watched and quickly forgotten.
