Darvin Ham has mastered the NBA Cup. The top assistant coach for the Milwaukee Bucks, Ham continued his perfect streak in NBA Cup competitions, reaching 14-0 following their 97-81 victory against the Oklahoma City Thunder on Tuesday, securing the championship in the league’s second in-season tournament. The Bucks’ head coach, Doc Rivers, also acknowledged Ham’s exceptional performance in the NBA Cup.
Ham previously captured the title at the NBA’s first In-Season Tournament in 2023 as the head coach of the Los Angeles Lakers. After two seasons with the Lakers, he was released and subsequently joined Doc Rivers’s coaching staff in Milwaukee. As the Bucks advanced through the 2024 Emirates NBA Cup, the basketball community began to notice Ham’s consistent success in the tournament.
Following the Bucks’ triumph in the NBA Cup on Tuesday night, Rivers commented on Ham’s extraordinary run in the tournament.
“By the way, we brought our secret weapon,” Rivers told the press after the victory over the Thunder. “Darvin Ham has maintained his unbeaten record now for two years in this tournament.”
Rivers then noted he had another secret weapon in his team, one that was actually part of the playing roster. Forward Taurean Prince, who had been with Ham on the Lakers last season, signed a one-year contract with the Bucks this year.
“When I mentioned that (about Ham),” Rivers continued, “(Prince) was like, ‘what about me?’ He’s also undefeated in the tournament, which is pretty cool for them. This experience will be beneficial for us moving forward because it’s tough—you come out of this and you have to get right back to the hard work of the regular season.”
Ham and Prince’s flawless record in the NBA Cup will continue into the next season, at least. Rivers might need to keep his secret weapons for another attempt at the in-season title in 2025.
