In a recent development in the NBA, the Boston Celtics have decided to send experienced forward Georges Niang and two future second-round draft selections to the Utah Jazz. In return, the Celtics will receive rookie guard RJ Luis Jr., as reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania.

This trade helps the Celtics stay below the Collective Bargaining Agreement’s secondary luxury tax threshold.
Earlier in the summer, the Celtics had acquired Niang from Atlanta in a deal that saw Kristaps Porzingis move to the Hawks. Niang, originally from Massachusetts, seemed set to join his local team. However, subsequent free agency moves pushed Boston above the league’s financial limits, which could have imposed restrictions on their future team management options.
Now, with this trade, the Celtics have managed to alleviate some of their salary cap concerns during a rebuilding phase. This comes at a time when star player Jayson Tatum is recovering from a torn Achilles tendon, incurred during the Eastern Conference semifinals. Meanwhile, the Jazz will take on Niang’s contract, utilizing a substantial trade exception they obtained earlier in the summer during the John Collins trade.
The Celtics are also welcoming RJ Luis Jr., a promising talent from St. John’s, who initially started his collegiate basketball career at UMass Amherst before transferring to play his last two years with the St. John’s Red Storm. Last season, Luis Jr. boasted an average of 18.2 points and 7.2 rebounds per game, shooting 43.9% from the field and earning the title of Big East Player of the Year.
