San Antonio Spurs head coach Gregg Popovich will be taking an indefinite leave due to a health concern, as reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania this Monday.

The 75-year-old coach started experiencing health issues prior to the team’s 113-103 victory against the Minnesota Timberwolves last Saturday. During his absence, assistant coach Mitch Johnson took over coaching duties and will continue to do so until Popovich can resume his responsibilities.

Popovich did not accompany the team for the upcoming games against the Los Angeles Clippers and Houston Rockets this week. His availability for the upcoming Thursday home game against the Portland Trail Blazers remains uncertain, with Mitch Johnson likely to remain as interim coach.

Having led the team to a 3–3 start this season, Popovich is in the third year of a five-year contract with the Spurs that he signed prior to the 2022–23 season. He has been a part of the Spurs organization since 1996 and is expected to end his career with the team.
