As Simmons enters his ninth season in the NBA—a season that sees him earning more than $40 million in the last year of his current deal—questions about his frequent absences over the past years are not unwarranted, especially considering the high expectations set when he first joined the league from LSU in 2016.
However, Simmons does not appreciate or accept such criticism lightly. He firmly believes that he is finally in good health, a claim that NBA enthusiasts are eager to see confirmed.
“I’ve been accused of ‘stealing,'” Simmons expressed to the New York Post. “No, when I signed that contract, my performance was at its peak. It’s unfortunate that I’ve been injured. But for someone to say that, it’s disrespectful. People can say what they want. They have to live with that. Ultimately, it catches up with them.”
Some might argue against Simmons, suggesting that he needs to accept the criticism since his health issues have indeed been a consistent barrier throughout his career, especially his recurring back problems.
Last season, Simmons only managed to play 15 games for Brooklyn, averaging 6.1 points, 7.9 rebounds, and 5.7 assists per game. For the Nets to feel they are getting their money’s worth in the final year of his contract, Simmons will need to significantly increase his game appearances from last season’s 15 out of a possible 82.
The Nets are set to start their regular season on October 23, playing away against the Atlanta Hawks.
