To thrive in the highly competitive world of professional sports, an athlete must possess a profound belief in their capabilities. Anthony Edwards of the Minnesota Timberwolves exemplifies this characteristic perhaps more vividly than any other athlete in the sports realm. His remarkable confidence is a significant factor in his rising popularity and the frequent viral spread of his statements, as highlighted by an incident on Sunday.

Recently, ESPN shared a segment from an interview where Edwards and another Minnesota sports icon, Justin Jefferson, came together to mimic the iconic magazine cover featuring Kevin Garnett and Randy Moss from years ago. In the video, Edwards engages in a lively debate with Jefferson about whether NBA players surpass NFL players in athleticism, before making a bold declaration about his own future.

During the discussion, Edwards expressed to Jefferson that should he secure an NBA championship within the next few years, he would consider switching to playing professional football.

“Basketball players making a transition to football is unheard of,” stated Edwards, a celebrated All-Star shooting guard. “I’ve already told my friends, if I manage to win a championship ring in the next three to four years, I’m aiming for football.”

“No, you’re not,” Jefferson is heard replying as the video concludes.

While it’s hard to envision Edwards actually switching to football, history shows some crossover between the sports at amateur levels. Several NFL legends, such as Tony Gonzalez and Antonio Gates, played college basketball before transitioning to successful football careers. Yet no professional athlete has switched from basketball to football at a professional level.

Interestingly, the reverse transition has occurred. Devin Funchess, formerly a standout receiver at Michigan, was picked by the Carolina Panthers in the 2015 NFL Draft but later pursued a professional basketball career. He debuted internationally in 2023 and is now playing for the Caribbean Storm in the Basketball League of Columbia.

In any case, Edwards’s statement is audacious. However, he needs to secure an NBA championship first.
