Anthony Davis and Kyrie Irving are set to become teammates at long last.

Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, Davis shared his enthusiasm about his unexpected trade to the Dallas Mavericks, which also involved Luka Dončić moving to the Los Angeles Lakers. The celebrated 10-time All-Star expressed particular excitement about playing with Irving, a topic they’ve discussed since 2018.

“It’s really thrilling. Back in 2018, when I requested a trade from New Orleans, I remember discussing this with [Irving], who was in Boston at the time before he moved to Brooklyn,” Davis recounted. “Playing together has been a long-held aspiration for both of us, and now, it’s finally becoming a reality.”

Now both in their early thirties, Davis at 31 and Irving at 32, they boast remarkably parallel careers in the NBA. Both were selected as the No. 1 overall picks in successive drafts, Irving in 2011 and Davis in 2012. Together, they have accumulated 18 All-Star selections and each has clinched an NBA championship playing alongside LeBron James—Irving in 2016 with the Cleveland Cavaliers and Davis in 2020 with the Lakers.

The duo is expected to create a powerful dynamic on the court, leveraging their combined skills for as long as they are teammates.
