Gregg Popovich, the renowned head coach of the San Antonio Spurs, is currently on an indefinite leave due to a health concern. This marks the first time since he began coaching the team in December 1996 that he has been away for a prolonged period.

The absence of Popovich is noticeable and affects everyone connected to the team, including newly signed player Chris Paul. Paul spoke to reporters on Monday, sharing his thoughts on the significant influence Popovich has had on him and his teammates.

“Although I have only been part of the team for a short while, I have always admired Pop throughout my career. I believe he is undoubtedly one of the greatest, particularly in providing perspective,” Paul remarked. “He’s incredibly altruistic, always reminding us of our privilege to play in the NBA and encouraging us to appreciate our opportunities, yet he would be the last to seek attention for himself. Despite his absence, everyone from the players to the staff deeply feels his absence, as his presence has a uniquely reassuring effect on us all,” he added.

In Popovich’s absence, assistant coach Mitch Johnson has stepped up as the acting head coach. Since Popovich took his leave, the team has managed a record of 1-1, bringing their season total to 3-4.
