“In Her Place” is a film directed by Maite Alberdi that tells the true story of María Carolina Geel, a writer who killed her lover. Available starting October 11, 2024, on Netflix.

In Her Place, the first feature film by Chilean filmmaker Maite Alberdi, who was previously nominated for an Oscar for her documentary The Eternal Memory, will debut on Netflix on October 11. In this drama, which premiered at the San Sebastián International Film Festival, she narrates the story of María Carolina Geel, who cold-bloodedly killed her lover in 1955, through the eyes of Mercedes, the reserved legal assistant to the judge handling the case.

At the time, this case captured public attention, highlighting societal norms toward women. “In 20th century Chile, most women convicted of murder were pardoned by the judicial system simply because they were women; sentencing them would bring them into the public eye. The pardons often cited the murderers’ insanity, but no one truly listened to their reasons,” Alberdi explained to Netflix.
