Since stepping away from professional football, specifically after Super Bowl LII in 2018, former Philadelphia Eagles center Jason Kelce has emerged as a moral voice for the Philadelphia sports community.

So when he voiced his opinions on the new, contentious arena plan for the Philadelphia 76ers on WIP-FM in Philadelphia on a Thursday morning, the locals were all ears.

“My preference is definitely for the Sixers to remain in South Philly,” Kelce expressed. “I’ll tell you this, though, once the arena is constructed in Center City and it displaces these people—at the end of the day, people are likely going to embrace it. In a decade, everything will have changed, and we’ll probably appreciate having such a magnificent complex in a vibrant part of the city. But at this moment, I truly despise it.”

The 76ers confirmed a deal on Wednesday with the city to erect a new stadium in the Center City neighborhood, close to Chinatown. This plan has sparked considerable backlash in Philadelphia due to these and other issues.

Kelce later made it clear that he would support the construction of a new arena in South Philadelphia, where the Wells Fargo Center currently stands, likening the 76ers’ tactics to those of former Cleveland Browns owner Art Modell in his dealings with Cleveland.
