The Los Angeles Lakers have recently disclosed their plans to pay tribute to the late NBA icon Jerry West throughout the upcoming season. West, who passed away at the age of 86 in June, had a profound impact on the team and the sport.

As a part of the homage, every Lakers player will adorn their jerseys with a commemorative patch featuring West’s No. 44, positioned on the left shoulder. The Lakers had previously retired this number back in 1983 to honor West’s contributions to the team.

Moreover, the franchise has announced a special Jerry West tribute event set for the season opener on October 22. This event will include a giveaway of No. 44 West jerseys to fans.

West’s illustrious NBA career was entirely spent with the Lakers, spanning from 1960 to 1974. During his tenure, he secured a championship and was named an All-Star 14 times. Following his playing days, he served as the Lakers’ coach from 1976 to 1979.

West is not only remembered for his contributions to the Lakers but also for his broader influence on the NBA. Famously known as “The Logo,” West’s silhouette was chosen as the basis for the NBA’s iconic emblem, which remains in use today.
