The Washington Wizards have finalized a contract buyout with Marcus Smart, a former NBA Defensive Player of the Year. Following the buyout, Smart is set to join the Los Angeles Lakers after he clears waivers, a development reported by ESPN’s Shams Charania.

Upon joining the Lakers, Smart will ink a two-year contract valued at $11 million, which also includes an option for the player to extend for the 2026 season. His addition is expected to significantly bolster the defensive capabilities of the Lakers’ backcourt, an area that was perceived as lacking in the current team setup.

As a three-time First-Team All-Defense honoree, Smart is recognized as one of the league’s premier on-ball defenders when he is at full health. Before his brief stints with the Memphis Grizzlies and the Washington Wizards, Smart spent the initial nine seasons of his NBA journey with the Boston Celtics.

While the Los Angeles Lakers, Phoenix Suns, and Milwaukee Bucks all showed interest in acquiring Smart, the allure of playing in Los Angeles proved too compelling for him to turn down.
